Understanding Routine Cleaning Versus Deep Cleaning
If you can’t remember the last time you had your teeth professionally cleaned, there’s a good chance you’ll need teeth cleaning in Miami during your next visit. The American Dental Association recommends adults visit the clinic twice yearly for an oral exam and teeth cleaning.
Upon assessment, your dentist will determine whether you need a routine cleaning or deep cleaning. Many patients think these two are the same. Well, they are not, and the procedures are entirely different.
Routine Cleaning Versus Deep Cleaning
Routine Cleaning Every Six Months
The cleaning you’ll get every six months is the regular six-month routine cleaning. It’s done to keep your gums healthy. The goal of this procedure is to remove bacteria and plaque buildup, scraping away the accumulation of tartar between your teeth and gum tissues.
If you brush and floss your teeth diligently and visit your dentist regularly for a routine cleaning, plaque is kept to a minimum.
Deep Cleaning When Necessary
Deep cleaning is a more thorough clean and is only performed when necessary. Your dentist will assess the amount of plaque, bacteria, and tartar in your mouth. When pockets have already formed in your gums as a result of advanced-stage gum disease, your dentist will recommend a deep clean.
Deep cleaning, otherwise known as scaling and root planing, involves the removal of plaque and tartar from the gum pockets (scaling) and the surface of the tooth roots (planing). Unlike regular cleaning, deep cleaning can take more than one session.
